Photo Journal

Today, I took some pictures around school with my students. It's a challenge to find an interesting image in a place so familiar and drab.

It was a beautiful sunny day -- just before noon -- and I was trying to get images that showed the light and shadows at interesting angles. I'm no photographer, but it was fun.

In the first picture, I wanted to get detail. I like photos of details. This is a white gravel area at the base of the school's front entrance.

The second picture shows a row of bicycles. Students who bike to school have numbers indicating where they must park their bike. That, I think, accounts for the neat row. Also, they must ride the same style of bike.

The last photo, I call "Prison" (刑務所・kei-mu-sho). Some students may think of school as a prison; I know I think it sometimes looks like one. Again, I was looking at the light and shadows, trying to find something visually interesting.

I hope you enjoyed this glimpse around school. Check out the "student blogs" for their photos and descriptions next week.

Oh, and if you have a moment -- I know it's hard, but... -- please tell me what photo you like the most.

  1. Jim, I would say you are a photographer! You've captured interesting detail in all three pictures. I think my favorite is the gravel at the school entrance.

  2. You're too kind, Knettie. And, I guess that first one has a "zen garden" thing going.

  3. I like the bicycle photo the best. I once did a ink pen drawing of our bicycle parking on the south side of the school. It's one of the nicest drawing I ever did. Although there's nothing extraordinary about bicycle parking, there is still something sublime in the image. Nice photos Jim.

  4. Thanks, Leslie. I can imagine that sort of ink drawing. It sounds really cool.

What I like about "the bike photo" is the blue reflection of the sky off of the fenders contrasted with the yellow beams of the area.

But I didn't see that until after I uploaded the photo. In other words, I was looking for shadow and light.
